Professional Adders deliver the goods

Atherstone Town picked up an impressive win away from home as they beat Whitchurch Alport 2-0 on Saturday afternoon.

Lewis Collins gave the Adders the lead in the first half, before Chris Cowley added a brilliant second in the second half.

Tyreace Brown was shown a straight red card late on in the game but that could do little to take the gloss of an impressive performance.

Next up for the Adders is a home game against Tividale on Saturday 12th.

With the weather postponing the midweek clash with Uttoxeter, Saturdays trip to Whitchurch Alport represented the first chance for Atherstone to put the Stourport game behind them. Despite putting in probably their most dominant performance all season, the late Stourport comeback had left everyone stunned and desperate to make amends.

Whitchurch have started the season well and represented a test for Mitch Thomsons side and their newfound form. The Adders supporters that made the trip were treated to another good performance from their side.

After cagey opening exchanges, Atherstone started to get their foot hold in the game by controlling the midfield. Chris Cowley became a influential figure, firing a left footed effort wide of the post.

Cowley had an even bigger impact on the 15 minute mark, delivering a low cross that was controlled by Lewis Collins before he swivelled and hammered an effort past the goalkeeper inside the area. The goal was Collins eighth of the season already, as his strike partnership with Ryan Harkin continues to reap rewards for both.

Atherstone stayed on the front foot after the opener, with Collins and Harkin making runs in behind that kept the back four occupied through out. Collins saw a deflected effort collected by the keeper, Toby Nicoll fired a tame left footed shot at goal and Harkin saw a near post flicked blocked on the line.

Whitchurch did little to trouble Finn Osborn in the Atherstone goal, but only being one goal down at the break meant the hosts were still in the game. Naill Rowe and Connor Gudger continued to build an effective partnership at the back, repelling the home sides attacks and protecting their young goalkeeper.

The Adders gave themselves a little breathing come with a wonderful second goal. A throw in on the right hand side was flicked on from the head of Collins, with Cowley latching onto the ball on the edge of the box and rifling a left footed volley into the top corner.

It was a special strike for the fan favourite that left the hosts keeper routed to the spot. The comfort of the second goal was welcomed by the travelling support, but none could forget what had happened the last time Atherstone led by two goals.

The Adders stayed on the front foot and went searching for the goal that would truly put the game to bed. Collins displayed his relentless work rate again, fizzing a ball into the box that was poked just wide of the far post by Harkin.

Whitchurch responded with sustained pressure down their left hand side and a barrage of crosses into the box. Osborn handled them with the confidence that we have come to expect, and Atherstone controlled the pace of the game to ensure their would be repeat of the Stourport game.

As the game ticked past the 90th minute, there was a late drama as Tyreace Brown was shown a straight red card for a mistimed challenge at full tilt. Brown has been a key figure since his arrival and his ban will be an issue for the management staff to solve, but his red card was the only blip on a positive day.

The Adders continued their recovery from the sluggish start with another impressive performance and eye catching result away from home. The win sees Atherstone continue to climb the table, with plenty of games in hand on the teams around them in the early stages of the campaign.

Next up for the Adders is a home game against Tividale on Saturday 12th October as they look to stretch their unbeaten run to seven games. Following that will be the return to FA Vase action a trip to take on Boston Town on 19th October.

Momentum is starting to build around the team now with the effort on the pitch being rewarded by a run of positive results. The boys will still need all of your support as they look to keep the good times rolling.
