Adders bite back
Atherstone Town pulled off a second half turnaround to pick up a 2-1 victory at home against Uttoxeter Town on Tuesday night.
Despite the Adders seeing more of the ball in the first half it was the visitors who took the lead just before half time.
Captain Connor Gudger struck the equaliser before Tom Smoth struck in added time to secure an important three points.
Next up for the Adders is a league cup tie against Nuneaton Griff on Tuesday 26th.
Coming off a hard fought victory against Tividale on Saturday, Atherstone were looking to make further moves up the table with a victory against Uttoxeter Town. Football is never that simple however, and the visitors provided a real test for Mitch Thomsons side.
170 Adders faithful braved the freezing cold to watch their side control possession in the first half, but struggled to carve out the clear cut chances to make it count. Atherstones forwards displayed their usual energy, but the final ball was just lacking as the Uttoxeter defence dealt with crosses into the box.
Lewis Collins was able to force a save with a flicked header and Charlie Williams fired a shot over, as the Adders attempted to capitalise on their good start. Tom Smith was the teams driving force from midfield again, continuing his fine recent form.
Just as the game looked to heading to the break goalless, Uttoxeter caught the Atherstone back line cold on the counter. Springing down the Adders right hand side, a ball was pulled back for David Ndene to fire home and give the visitors the lead on the struck of half time.
The goal was sucker punch for the Adders, who gathered themselves during the interval and came out in the second half with renewed impetus. Crosses into the box continued to be a theme, as Atherstone looked to work their way into the contest.
On the hour mark, a free kick on the left hand side provided a chance for defenders to get forward and cause havoc. The ball was whipped into the general direction of Connor Gudger, and the captain was fastest to react to the loose ball to hammer home an equaliser.
Spurred on by the goal and a host of attacking changes, the Adders went about looking for their winner. Uttoxeter were still a counter attacking threat, but did little to trouble Finn Osborn, their best efforts free kick which was rifled into the wall.
As the game ticked past the 90th minute it looked as though the spoils would be shared, until Chris Cowley made a surging run down the left and floated a ball over to the back post. Man of the match Smith saw his first effort blocked, but picked him up to squeeze the rebound home at a tight angle.
Cue wild celebrations as Atherstone displayed their resilience and secured an important three points at home. The win saw the Adders rise to seventh in the table, just four points outside of the play off places with games in hand on the sides around them.
With momentum building, Atherstone are next in action at home against Nuneaton Griff on Tuesday 26th in the League Cup. The next league action will see the Adders travel to take on sixth placed Stone Old Alleynians on Saturday 30th, a game which could have massive implications in the play off hunt.
The season is really starting to heat up now and the team are showing they have the skill and the will to compete at the sharp end of the league. A run of nine league games unbeaten have put the Adders well and truly into contention.
